I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist practising at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust and the Spire Hospital in Elland.
I was born in West Yorkshire but spent most of my formative years in Harare, Zimbabwe. I returned in my early teens to attend Batley Grammar School and am now happily settled with my family in Huddersfield. Fishing, fell-walking and football are the pastimes I enjoy most. Ophthalmology has been a passion of mine for over a decade. I feel privileged to work in a branch of medicine that has constantly innovated and evolved and now has an array of successful life-changing treatment options.
My training has been extensive and I have actively sought training in the most advanced, successful and safest forms of surgery. I am one of a handful of surgeons who is fellowship trained in treating both corneal disorders and glaucoma. This allows me to adopt a uniquely comprehensive approach to complex reconstructive surgery of the front of the eye.
Selective Corneal Transplantation (DMEK) for Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy.
DMEK is the latest iteration of corneal endothelial transplantation and offers superior outcomes to the current standard, DSEK. DMEK involves transplanting a 10 micron layer of endothelial cells (as opposed to 100micron DSEK transplant). Dr Musa and the team at Calderdale Hospital were the first group to perform this revolutionary surgery in the North of England in February 2013.
Detailed glaucoma diagnosis with OCT (optical coherence tomography) and visual field analysers. Secretive later trabeculoplasty as an alternative to drop treatment.
Partial thickness glaucoma surgery (deep sclerectomy)- an advanced form of surgery for glaucoma that is safer than the standard full-thickness surgery (trabeculectomy).
Individually customised cataract and lens replacement with toric and multifocal lenses.
To stay at the cutting edge of my profession I maintain an avid interest in developing and contributing to scientific advances and have contributed to book chapters, numerous scientific papers as well as regularly showcasing my work at international meetings.
